Gay Travel in Cabo
Gay and Grinning in Los Cabos
Though the Los Cabos area doesn’t yet have the reputation that Puerto Vallarta might have, of being a gay Mexican mecca, it is a place of general congeniality and acceptance, and should be high on the list of destinations where gay and lesbian couples can enjoy fun, sun and world-class recreational opportunities. Both of Los Cabos’ anchors—dynamic, fun-loving Cabo San Lucas and quieter, traditional San José del Cabo—have much to offer gay travelers in the way of deluxe accommodations, world-class shopping and spas, and that spicy Mexican flavor and culture.
Los Cabos offers a dizzying array of choices of where to stay (and play). Topping the list, for their stunning beauty and the alluring sense of private retreat they provide, are luxury villas. The area has a deep range of such properties, almost all of which offer splendid architecture, lavish furnishings and features, and ocean views that are indescribably lovely. For instance, the gated community of the Pedregal, whose villas can overlook the Sea of Cortez or the Pacific, has a host of cliff-top properties that are a wonder to behold—and a supreme pleasure to vacation in.
Gay-Friendly Goodies
Staying in a fantastic villa also offers discerning travelers the chance to revel in all manner of private pleasures, such as in-villa gourmet chef services and the full range of spa and health pamperings, all without having to leave the home’s charms behind. Of course, that’s not to discredit the exquisite choices in resort properties available in Los Cabos: Some of the biggest names in the resort game—the Hilton, the Sheraton, the Westin—have their well-scrubbed hands in the Los Cabos vacation pot, and their properties are showcases of style and polish. Many other splendid resort properties compete for vacationers’ attentions as well. Though not specifically attuned to gay travelers, these are large properties with courteous, attentive staffs that respect the privacy of their guests. Many of the resort properties have multiple restaurants, spas, stores, athletic facilities and other amenities to keep their guests occupied and happy.
Once you’re out and about in Los Cabos, there’s no lack of fun things to do. The highest of high-end golfing options are available, and the watersport activities, from whale watching to diving to snorkeling to swimming to big-time fishing, are all first-rate. For vacationers eager to take home a slice of Mexican culture, both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo offer selections of local handicrafts, silver and art. A bit further away, the government-declared “magical” town of Todos Santos is renowned as an artists’ colony, noted for painting and sculpture. The Todos Santos Inn is gay-friendly. Also, in the Cabo Marina is the Rainbow Bar and Lounge, Cabo’s only “real” gay bar, an intimate and friendly spot. But most Los Cabos establishments are intimate and friendly to all their visitors.
Another travel option might be the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ Radiance of the Seas, which offers a gay cruise to Cabo, among other Mexican port stops. However you get to Los Cabos—and whatever accommodation or activity option you choose—you’ll be happily welcomed in the mix of fun-loving vacationers. Los Cabos is simply a place where there’s good fun to be had.
