Navidad in Los Cabos

Christmas in MexicoThe Christmas (Navidad) season in Los Cabos—and in much of Mexico—is a traditional time of celebration and reflection. During Christmas week, from the 16th through the 24th, Mexican families, businesses and neighborhoods throw Christmas parties called Posadas, a re-enactment of Joseph and Mary's search for lodging (a posada) in Bethlehem. Sometimes children who are dressed as Joseph and Mary, accompanied by shepherds, will be led by another child with a lantern playing the part of a guiding angel. The streets also might be filled with vendors and activities from street fairs.

The Posada procession, often candlelit, might go from house to house or to a designated “inn.” Joseph and Mary plead for shelter, and the group inside rejects them, except for the final Posada on the 24th, where they are finally given protection.

Once the singing is over, everyone goes inside to break the Piñata, a star-shaped papier-mâché container full of sweets, mandarines, and small toys. After the last Posada on the 24th, a traditional Midnight Mass takes place.

Elaborate public nativity scenes are also a Navidad tradition. Sometimes, instead of just focusing on the typical stable/manger scene, the depictions might include the surrounding village or countryside. Extravagant renderings might include shepherds on their way across the fields, rivers, and other dramatic scenes.

Holiday in CaboNochebuena, or Christmas Eve, is an important family reunion, and the meal generally takes precedence over that of Christmas Day. The supper is at 12 pm, and often consists of turkey, as well as Romeritos (an herb) in Mole (a spicy chocolate sauce) with shrimps and potatoes, and a Basque dish, Bacalao, cod served a la vizcaina. The traditional dessert is Colación, a mixture of candies in syrup.
