Local Businesses currently reopened

Just ten days after Hurricane Odile made landfall in Los Cabos causing significant damage, we’ve seen a remarkable storm cleanup effort. Already, many restaurants, large grocery stores and small shops are reopening. Resorts continue to announce reopening dates throughout October and November, while others are open and ready to receive visitors. The Mexican government has done a truly impressive and commendable job rapidly bringing in resources to support the ongoing rebuilding efforts, working on reestablishing phone connectivity and electricity, and providing for the basic needs of the local population. While getting things completely back to pre-storm conditions will still take some time, having been in business for over 25 years specializing in Los Cabos we can honestly say that we are excited by how quickly the region is reestablishing itself and readying for the arrival of visitors in coming weeks and months!

UPDATE – LOS CABOS IS READY TO WELCOME YOU!

Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism Claudia Ruiz Massieu has been on the ground in Los Cabos coordinating a multiple-agency recovery effort following Odile. President Enrique Peña Nieto has also made repeated visits to Baja California Sur to survey damage and progress being made.

Update 10/3/14 – Grupo Aeropuerto del Pacifico has issued a press release stating that the San José del Cabo International Airport (SJD) has reopened as of 10/3/14 for domestic and international flights and that continuing repairs will be ongoing.

Update 10/2/14 – BCSNoticias.com (en Español) is reporting that 99% of power has been restored in Baja California Sur, and 97% in Los Cabos.

Update 10/2/14 – BCS NOTICIAS is reporting that the SJD airport has reopened to commercial flights ahead of schedule on Friday, October 3rd. Visit our Hurricane Odile blog post for the latest status on resorts and the airport.

The Cabo Expeditions Team providing post-storm beach cleanup. “Estamos de Pie” translates to “We are Standing!”

Our friend Oscar of Cabo Expeditions shares the following observations:

I have been in Cabo for 19 years. I arrived with just $30 in my pocket and the town was still very small, with approximately 20,000 people and just one stop light. One day, I took a visitor form Ensenada out to snorkel at Santa Maria and Chileno Bay. He ended up giving me the opportunity to buy my first boat on credit. This is how Cabo Expeditions began. In the early days, we would have 7-14 guests per week. Now, we offer whale watching by zodiac, snorkeling tours and numerous other excursions and take out approximately 40,000 visitors out each year. Day by day, I discovered the wonders of this magical place, including the beauty of all the sea life and its natural heritage. The hurricane was frightening. However, shortly after I sent a van to La Paz for supplies and we got right down to work cleaning the streets and the marina. Now my team is spending our energy on supporting the recovery. Every day, I see local people working together to revive our beloved Cabo. The best way to help is to come and visit Los Cabos. The entire Cabo community is ready to welcome visitors and share with you this amazing place that we call home!

Here are some post-Odile photos showing the results of the cleanup.

We live in Cabo and were unfortunatly here in the States for my husbands surgery! We have lived in Cabo full time for 2 years years and this is our home, there is no storm strong enough to keep us from loving Cabo, we feel blessed to be with the people of Cabo and are very grateful to all those who have helped with the clean up and kept the pride in which we live, bless you all! We only regret we could not have been there to help! VIVE CABO, Debbie and Terry

      • ernie westgate

from what was to what is, you people in cabo are incredible. The place looks great. looking forward to heading there next month.

    • Ed Temple

We rebooked our reservation due to the hurricane. Will be arriving in Cabo on November 10 and are staying at Sandos Finnestra suppose to be open Nov 1. Does it look like it will be reopened on November 1? Will the restaurants be open there?

      Thanks!

  • Ali Trippy

Hi! Any pictures of the Cabo del Sol clubhouse or ceremony site? We are set to get married there on November 9 and are anxious to get photos to see if the location will be ready by our date.

    Thanks!

    • Ercilia

Hi Ali, we don’t have any further photos but we’ve requested some. You might want to get in touch directly with the golf course as well. If we receive anything further, we’ll post. Good luck!

  • matthew cox

Any idea when there will Be an official statement regarding airport Reopening? Suppose to get married there on The beach At Cabo Villas on Oct 10th

    • Ercilia

So far, the official word is still that is will possibly reopen on October 9th. We’ll continue to monitor for official updates. An alternative is to fly into La Paz (LAP) and drive into Cabo San Lucas, it’s about a 2 to 2.5 hour drive.

  • Dawn Plimmer

Saddest part is the empty beaches and streets! Looks like cabo is open for business! Good to see our favorite vacation place getting on its feet. Send in the tourists.

  • Bryyan Haugen

My wife and I have been going to Cabo every winter since 1979 and consider it our home. we were so devastated by the initial news and are overjoyed by the recouvery. The people of the Baja are so hardy we knew they would rebound. We spend our winters at Misiones del cabo and it is amazingly intact. We were wondering how the Mona Lisa restaurant made out , being it is so exposed. Anyword?

  • Dianne

Any word on the Office, Billigans and Mango bar? Also how about Edith ‘s. We are coming Nov. 2 . Very excited to help out the economy !

  • Don Hamilton

Looking forward to coming back to Dreams and playing Cabo Real Golf Course. Was there a lot of damage to Dreams and will it be open in the next month?

      • CRSIII

Any word on the Me Cabo? The list shows a Feb. 1, 2015 re-open date?? Why so much longer than all the resorts right around it? We have a big group coming down on Dec. 6th…so just curious?

Also, is Tabascos going to be up an running in the next 30 days? I sure hope so :).

        • Ercilia

We haven’t received word yet on Tabascos. ME Cabo is still assessing repairs necessary and will update reopening date when they know more. As such, their reopening date is definitely subject to change. Keep checking our blog. If you booked with Earth, Sea & Sky Vacations (CaboVillas.com), please contact us to review your reservation. If you booked directly with the resort, please contact them.

  • Scott Mentzer

We will be down Jan 7 to stay at Cabo Azul Resort And Spa, I here it is in good shape but we was wondering how everything else is? I dont need much more than the beach and some rum but the family wanted me to make sure everything would be up and running.

  • Jake Hansen

We will be at Misones del Cabo on the first Day of November for a week. By your best estimation, will that resort be up and fully running? Meaning pools open, etc? Thanks for the info! Can’t wait to come visit!

    • Ercilia

Hi Jake, we don’t work directly with Misiones del Cabo, so your best bet is to contact them directly. Los Cabos looks forward to receiving you!

      • Linda

I own a condo @ Misiones facing the Sea of Cortez. Top (second floor). Minimal damage. One of my patio doors blew out towards the Sea. The other patio door had no broken glass. My Property Manager emailed photos. Looks good.

        Linda

        • Camille Deluhery

Linda, saw your post on this link for updates. I have plans to stay at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar for New Years, but was wondering if you rent your condo out during the high or low season? would be interested in information if you do, thanks and glad to hear you didn’t have major damage. I love Cabo, plan to spend to help the economy and can’t wait to get back!

  • Laurie

Just checking any pictures and/or update on the Sheridan Hacienda Del Mar? Not seeing anything posted, guessing at the Sheridan’s request? I’m hearing that they received allot of damage. Update is greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • mike felts

Is there any idea when the airport will “definitely be opened 100% for all regularly scheduled flights ? We have plans for 11/4 and haven’t heard anything definite.

    • Ercilia

Hi Mike! The official reports that we’ve heard is that SJD will be open to SOME commercial flights on or around October 8th. Unfortunately, a number of airlines have cancelled flights during part of the month of October. However, we’ve already seen flight availability with Alaska into Los Cabos beginning October 8th. Your best bet is to stay in touch with your airline directly, as each of the airlines have differing policies and estimates at the moment. The situation continues to change day to day.

    • Ercilia

You can monitor our other blog post at http://blog.cabovillas.com/?p=2547 for all of the latest resort reopening estimates. Royal Solaris posted the following yesterday: “We inform you that Royal Solaris Los Cabos has a tentative opening date, which is on November 15, we are working enthusiastically to make this happen and to welcome you to your home away from home. Stay tuned for more news here.” We’ll continue to update this page as more information becomes available. Any word on nowhere bar and mandala? Can’t find any tweets or info on them. Looks like mango deck has recovered and reopened according to their twitter account.

    • Ercilia

Mandala did experience some damage and the latest we’ve heard is that they are diligently working on the cleanup, we don’t have an official reopening date yet. We’re happy to report the Nowhere Bar is now reopen!

  • JR Roberts

Can you request some pictures from RIU Santa Fe. Saw some pictures of the resort when it had some flooding. Wondering how it looks. Thanks!

    • Ercilia

Hi JR, we have requested photos from them but their priority right now is readying the resort for their reopening date. If we get any, we’ll be sure to update here!

  • Rachael

Thanks for all the updates, you’re doing a great job! We are due to fly in to Cabo on 17th November, collect a hire car and drive up to La Paz where we left our camper for the summer. Any idea how bad the roads are up that way, or any word on how the repairs are going? I’ve no doubt the speed of recovery is due to the hard work of local people. I was stuck in Cancun for four days when hurricane Wilma struck in 2005, one of 1000 people evacuated from a storm shelter when the roof blew off. Local people not only gave us food and water despite in many cases having lost their own homes, but also worked like crazy to clean up the devastation and rebuild afterwards. Fantastic lovely kind people.

    • Ercilia

Hi Rachel, the road between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz is open! Thanks for your kind words. The people of Los Cabos have done an AMAZING job pulling together to get things cleaned up and repaired in record time!

  • Art Giffey

Looks like you guys are really pulling together and getting this place back on track. Saw a lot of recovery pictures of Medano beach. Didn’t see Baja Catina’s swing bar in any of them. Did the swing bar make it?

    • Ercilia

Any updates on how El Zalate fared? I know coral baja, which is next door, sustained major damage and will not reopen until Jan.31. Any info is appreciated!

  • Patti Fedo

I have been wondering about 2 things that I haven’t seen anyone ask about. How did the Dolphin Encounter survive, are all the dolphins safe? and how about the restaurant La Golondrina (used to be the “Trailer Park)? That is our favorite seafood restaurant with excellent service…we’ve been going there since 1999!!!!

    • Ercilia

Hi Patti! We’re happy to report that the Cabo Dolphins facility is in great shape! Haven’t heard yet about the Trailer Park/La Golondrina but hopefully somebody will see your post here and be able to comment further if they’ve heard.

Hi Ernie, we don’t have a definitive report about the current condition all the way down – however, we have heard some reports that folks have made the drive already. Maybe somebody will see your post and be able to update further.

    • ernie

We just drove the mex 1 from tecate to cabo in a 2006 class A 34 ft m/h towing a jeep on nov 24-28, 2014. The road is in pretty good shape there is construction about 100 miles south of ensanada, about 50 miles south of loretto & the last 25 miles north of La Paz but all are in decent shape. In all this will only make a difference of about 1 1/2 hrs total. These are still Mexican roads [narrow & rough at times] so drive with caution!!!!!!!!!

  • Andrea C

I was wondering if you have heard anything about the Sand Bar restaurant on Medano Beach? We have been going there for many years and would appreciate any updates you have. We are looking forward to coming in January.

  • Frank

Saw pictures of the bridge between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas was out. We will be flying into SJD airport on Oct.26 just wondering if we can drive to Cabo San Lucas. Love your web site. Pictures are amazing. Thanks for all your work.

  • Paul Galea

Our attention has been drawn to the Hurricane disaster in Cabo San Lucas. Our Prayers for the safety of all citizens there and for quick recovery to your homes, businesses & landscapes.
We are wondering at what percentage the Marina (if any) has been restored and also the general condition of restruants & Resorts such as the Villa Del Arco.
Thank you in advance for any information you can give

Hi just checking if it’s still a good idea to come October 18-25 ? We have our time share at cabo villas and playa grande. We have 8 of us coming, but will reschedule if u don’t think it’s completely ready for tourists. Is the road from San jose to San Lucas open? Is there food and drinks at Walmart for us to buy for our hotel rooms ? Will there be construction going on it either one of the hotels while we are there? Is the swingset back up at Baja cantina beach ? Thank you

    • Ercilia

Many resorts, restaurants, bars and shops are reopened! Swings are back up at Baja Cantina as well. The road is open between SJD and Cabo San Lucas. Come on down! Los Cabos is ready for you.

    • Ercilia

We want to say a HUGH thank you for the EXCELLENT care given to us at the Villa del Palmar. We were there the night Odile hit us head on and it was a horrific storm!!! Violent!!! The next morning and for the next three days everyone started helping each other by sweeping water out of their rooms and helping pick up broken pieces of plexiglas from the Lobby roof that was in the hallways. The Manager was AWESOME, a man that really cares about people. The staff, well they are just beyond words, COMPASSIONATE in every way. Giving answers to all of our questions and even with a smile. AMAZING place to stay. They worked so quickly and efficiently to make meals for all their guests. Not a charge for one of them. I will never forget how they performed so beautifully in such a devastating moment. May God bless each and every one of you ten fold over. We will definitely return to Cabo, we fell in love with it seven days before the storm hit it was a colorful paradise. We will be back. Thank you again Villa del Palmar for your great care for your guests. It came from your tender hearts. We love you. Al and Diana (Dee)

  • Farzana

Thanks for the photos! I’m so happy Cabo is recovering so quickly. I was so saddened to hear about the hurricane. I plan on staying at Marina Fiesta. Any info about damages there ? Have they opened ? Thanks for the info. I cant wait to come back and meet all the sweet peeps 🙂

      • Farzana

Woo-hoo ! Nice ! I booked my trip last April (when I got back from there LOL) I’m excited all over again. Can you recommend some fun things to do with a 4 and 5 year old boys ? I have never brought them before so its their first. I was thinking the dolphins but none of us can swim so I dont know how that will work.

  • Andrea

So glad to see that Cabo San Lucas is awaiting us! Any updates on Maro’s Shrimp House and la Dolce in Cabo? I understand that Hidalgo Street was hit pretty hard.

We will be in Cabo starting on the 23rd of this month for a few weeks for our annual vacation. Any organizations my family could hook up with to help out in the community for a few days of our vacation? I have 4 teenagers and we all could lend a hand as I imagine there is plenty of need beyond the tourist corridor. Thanks

    • Ercilia

We don’t have an update on it yet but we’ll update the blog as soon as we hear. Meanwhile, hopefully somebody will see your post and be able to comment further.

  • Kirbee

Hi my family and I will be staying at the riu palace for a week from November 20 onward. How is the water situation and safety of food and drinks, I don’t want my family to end up in their rooms for a week sick..what updates do you have on water supply and updates on the riu palace???
    Thank. You

    • Ercilia

Hi Kirbee, the last update that we’ve received is that the RIU Palace is expected to be open and operating TODAY. So you should be fine. Have a wonderful trip! Note that most resorts and quite a number of restaurants in Los Cabos have water purification systems in place.

  • Steven Spahr

There is a very cool family owned Taco Place up in the El Squid area by the fire station named Gardenias. Any word if was damaged and is open? Coming in Nov. A must eat tradition.

  • Teresa P

Good afternoon- I am extremely excited to hear that Cabo is recovering exceptionally well. Is there a specific site or information that we can make donations to help support the efforts. My husband and I our members of Casa Dorada and will be heading out in November. We love Cabo, usually visit twice a year and would like to help out in any way we can. I was also wondering about a few of our favorite spots. Do you have any updates or information on Maro’s Shrimp house and also El Pastor Gran? I have been looking but cant seem to find anything on them. Our thoughts and prayers are with our second home.

  • anita maranon

My family love love Cabo ,any update you can tell us Pueblo Bonito Rose ?.Our favorite restaurant is Mocambo I wonder if its open .How is the water and food situation?.I’m Hoping not to cancel our trip looking forward to be there by this month 10/25 for a week.

    • Ercilia

Pueblo Bonito Rosé has reopened! We don’t have an update yet on Mocambo. Many restaurants, grocery stores and shops have already reopened, and others opening up every day. Los Cabos looks forward to welcoming you.

  • Frankie

Have been looking at the posts hoping to see something on Club Casadas which is next to Tabasco’s restaurant. Have heard that they had much damage but have not been able to get a real feel for when they will open and what the resort looks like. Any way of getting any photos or info on their recovery?

  • mike

    Ercilia

Compliments on the great job you and your team have done the last month.

How smooth is the passage thru the airport. I understand only the old terminal is open but with less planes has it sped up getting thru customs ?

We will be there on the 4th Nov for 2 days fishing and 9 days of partying.

Can’t wait to see old friends !!!

    • Ercilia

Hi Mike! Thanks for your kind words! I’ll check with our sales team to see what they’ve heard so far from our clients as to the airport process. This is what the tourism bureau has advised: “Dear Cabo visitors, we would like to give you the following information regarding the Los Cabos International Airport, in order for you to take the appropriate precautions. Departures; Both, national and international departures will take place at Terminal 2. Arrivals: International flights will be landing and arriving at Terminal 2, however, national flights’ customers will land at Terminal 2, but will be taken by bus to Terminal 1, where they can pick-up their luggage.”

  • Videroo

Thank you for all the information, making me feel a lot better about our upcoming trip in January. Do you have any information about how the clean up and repairs are going in San Jose Del Cabo ? In particular the Bel Air Collection Hotel/Resort, how did they fare, are they back up and running. Thanks for any information you can provide. As I mention, we’re not going until mid Jan so we’ve got a little time but I would like to know how they are doing. Thx, Videroo

    • Ercilia

Hi there, the Bel Air Collection is expected to reopen in December, so they will be up and running for your return. Los Cabos is in great shape to welcome visitors, although a number of resorts are still in the cleanup phase.

      • Videroo

Can you tell me anything about how they fared or how badly they were hit. I send them an email a couple weeks ago and have not received a response so, that’s making me a little nervous. But if they are scheduled to re-open in Dec, we should be OK. We’re booked for the latter half of Jan. Thanks for your information and help

        • Ercilia

Hello, if you booked with Earth, Sea & Sky Vacations (CaboVillas.com), please give us a ring. If you booked directly with the resort, please contact them. Currently, they’re still projected to be in operation in December.

  • John

Thank you for the “on the ground” information. Been planning our 40th anniversary celebration for mid-January. First time to Cabo. Looks like the Secrets hotels will be open–but worried that the damage to Cabo and San Jose was so extensive that we will miss the full Cabo experience. Thoughts appreciated.

    • Ercilia

Hi John, our advice would be to come down and experience Los Cabos. The area is in surprisingly great shape to welcome visitors, and you won’t be disappointed. While the images showing the immediate aftermath of the storm did look pretty significant and there WAS damage in the region, you’ll find that most of the tourist-oriented areas including the marina, shopping areas, restaurants, beaches, etc are in spectacular shape. Furthermore, the local population depends a lot on tourism income, so their already legendary hospitality has only been heightened by the desire to welcome visitors back to Cabo. The airport opened early this month and the city of Cabo San Lucas is bustling this week for the Bisbee fishing tournament.

  • Rick

Can anyone tell me if Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort suffered any real damage? Have they reopened? What does that property look like after the hurricane? Any information would help as we plan to visit early December 2014.

    • Ercilia

We haven’t received photos yet of Secrets Puerto Los Cabos to post online, however all of our reports indicate they’ll reopen November 15th and that is a SPECTACULAR property.

  • Laura

    Hi Ercilia

    Thanks for all the updates.

We visit every year in early Dec. we always stop at Zippers on the beach on our way in from the airport and then on our way to the airport when we leave.

Any word on how they are doing or if they have re-opened?

    • Angela

Zippers is open, was there twice last week. They have done a great job of getting it ready to go. The sea wall has gone and they have lots of tables on the sand as flooring went but staff are in great spirits and are happy to see people returning.

  • Steve

Thanks for your great information. I am coming next week & will spread the word on the rebuilding of Los Cabos.

Any word on a couple of favorite restaurants/hang outs:

La Dolce, Shooters , La Playita, & Tropicana, Flora Farms(San Jose)
    Gardenias Cabo

    Thanks,

    Steve

    • Ercilia

I do know that Flora Farms and Gardenias are open. We’ll continue to update as we hear more. Meanwhile, hopefully somebody can comment further on your post if they happen to know. Los Cabos looks forward to welcoming you.

  • Nancy

Just inquiring to find out if the airport is open? Also how did the Riu Santa Fe fare? Are they operational and open for business? Reading the posts I hope more places will get you updates so people can find out how everything is going! Love Cabo and sure it will get going again.

    • Ercilia

Hi Sonja, we don’t work with them directly so we don’t have an update but hopefully somebody will see your post and be able to comment further.

    • Alisa

Mykonos currently has intermittent phone service and internet connection. It also depends on the condo you are renting. Majority of condos windows were blown out but most have been replaced although there are a few still boarded up. The grounds and pool are clean.

I would suggest calling the person who you rented the condo from to see where their condo is in the clean up process.

  • Teresa

My husband & I were looking at booking our next family vacation in Cabo for December or January but we were concerned about whether everything would be back on track by that time…it looks like the clean up is coming along nicely! We’ve never been here before & want the full pre-hurricane experience & beauty. Love the pics! Looking forward to visiting!!! 😀

  • Andrea

I spoke to Maro himself last night on the phone and his restaurant is open and so is La Dolce. We have all been anxious…and YES he is busy and awaiting all of his American friends and tourists with his wonderful shrimp and lobster.

  • Mary Kay Lawrence

I’m so happy to hear that Cabo is opening back up. This has been our favorite vacation spot for a couple years now and we love The Riu. How are the beaches? Are they clean from depris and seaweed? We are looking to come visit in Feb, is there ziplining available, I didn’t see it on the list. There weren’t any pictures of The Riu Santa Fe to show how the trees looked. some of the trees in the resort are damaged so badly it takes away of the scenery. All in all though we are still coming.

    • Ercilia

Hi Mary! The Riu Santa Fe has reopened and the beaches are looking beautiful. It’s true that palm trees throughout the destination took a hit from the storm and it will take time for them to grow back fully, but your ocean views are sure to make up for it. Come down and enjoy!

  • Dennis Stanzione

I am planning my first visit to Cabo in January, but I am not sure what the status of my resort is. I am registered at the Fiesta Americana Vacation Club in Cabo del Sol. Can you tell me if they are open and ready for guests?

    • Ercilia

Fiesta Americana is having their grand reopening today and is ready to receive guests, however it is best for you to check directly with the party through which you booked your vacation for the current status of your reservation.

  • Heidi Hausner

I am planning my first visit to Cabo in mid-February, but I am not sure what is the status of my resort. I am registered at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa. Can you tell me how their recovery efforts are progressing and if they will be ready for guests? Thank you

  • Justin

Do you know if the Hard Rock Cafe is open still? I am an avid collector and want to visit on my first trip to Cabo early next year.

  • Glenn

I was thinking of going to Cabo in early January. I really enjoy going to the Mandala bar and can’t seem to find any info if it is reopened. Can anyone help answer my question?

    • Ercilia

We don’t have an update for them as we don’t work with them directly. Your best best would be to contact the party through which your reservation was made. Enjoy Los Cabos!

  • Barbara German

Hi I am looking to book a trip to Cabo in May. How is everything coming along. I assume that everything will be up and running smoothly so that any place I book will be open for business by then. Can’t wait.
