Christmas in Mexico

Christmas in Mexico
The Christmas (Navidad) season in Los Cabos—and in much of Mexico—is a traditional time of celebration. During Christmas week, Mexican families and neighborhoods throw Christmas parties called Posadas, a re-enactment of the Biblical story of Joseph and Mary's search for lodging (a posada) in Bethlehem. Sometimes children dressed as Joseph and Mary, accompanied by shepherds, are led by another child with a lantern playing the part of a guiding angel. The Posada procession, often candlelit and accompanied by music, goes from house to house (representing inns). They plead for shelter, with the group inside symbolically rejecting them, except for the final Posada on the 24th, when they are finally given protection. Once the singing is over, everyone goes inside to break a piñata full of sweets and small toys. After the last Posada on the 24th, a traditional Midnight Mass takes place.

Elaborate public nativity scenes are also a Navidad tradition. Sometimes, instead of just focusing on the typical stable/manger scene, the depictions might include the surrounding village or countryside.

Nochebuena, or Christmas Eve, is an important family reunion, and the meal generally takes precedence over that of Christmas Day.
