Mention the word tequila to a foreigner, or anyone not from Mexico, and chances are that visions of overzealous partiers wearing gigantic sombreros, all while slamming shots of the powerful liquor, might come to mind. For those from Mexico, however, tequila represents something different; it is a drink born, perfected, and enjoyed here, and a product Mexicans take great pride in serving to the world.
Blue Agave fields in Mexico
Due to the richness of the soil, and following a tightly-controlled process, only five states within Mexico can produce it: Jalisco and some regions in Guanajuato, Nayarit, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas. With the ever-shifting world view of tequila though, boosting it from a “shooter” to a sophisticated drink worthy of sipping, other areas within Mexico are getting in on the action, and our seaside destination is no different. Continuing to lead the way in just about everything Los Cabos offers, this area even boasts its own brands of tequilas, hailing from Jalisco, as well as a plethora of cool places to sample and buy them.

Cabo Wabo Tequila
Although having reached fame long before marketing his own brand of Mexico´s national drink, former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar has truly skyrocketed as a celebrity in the world of tequila in recent years. Named after his Cabo San Lucas cantina, Cabo Wabo, Sammy´s label offers the traditional varieties of blanco, reposado, añejo, and the newest, Cabo Uno, and has won countless awards in so doing. Back in 1996 Hagar teamed up with a Guadalajara family with over 80 years in the production business and he´s been successfully bottling their best ever since. Both within and outside of Cabo, in mixed drinks or by itself, Cabo Wabo Tequila will not disappoint.
Cocktail made from Tequila
Another Los Cabos club owner recently ventured into the tequila distribution business as well. Poncho Vasquez, owner of the La Paz and Cabo bars Las Varitas, has taken his successful business name and slapped it across the newly- created Tequila Las Varitas. Officially launched in 2007, this reposado blend was originally created for in-house use, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the La Paz Las Varitas. Vasquez took it one step further, though, making his tequila available at Las Varitas bars and the boutiques on the premises of both locations. Soon, patrons will be able to purchase this brand at the Los Cabos Costco, too.

Los Cabos Tequila Restaurants
Produced in Arandas, Jalisco, Tequila Las Varitas is the newest member of the Los Cabos tequila club. Whether a total rookie or tequila know-it-all, sampling tequilas from all over Mexico can be an excellent way to begin or end an evening in Los Cabos. With so many to select from, good luck staying on your stool! Pancho´s Restaurant & Tequila Bar, in downtown Cabo, boasts its own tequila tasting room for travelers looking to try a few of the 500 types carried here. In addition to receiving tequila-related knowledge, customers will also walk away with a souvenir clay mug and “Master of Tequila” certificate generated by Pancho´s. Located just blocks from Pancho´s is Hemingway´s Cigar & Tequila Lounge, and despite being a Cuban-inspired joint, they stock one hefty selection of Mexico´s finest. Try a few at your table or mosey back to La Tequileria, Hemingway´s tasting area and boutique, for several half-ounce samples, all served in Reidel crystal glasses, made specifically for sipping fine spirits.
The Tequila Museum
If trying and buying is more your style, then perhaps the Tequila Museum along Cabo´s Golden Zone on the marina is just right for you. Tour the museum and partake in the complimentary sampling of as many as five different tequilas as the host educates you on all things tequila. You can also select from a myriad of labels as part of a mixed drink in the Tequila Museum bar. Among the various tequilas for sale here is Cola de Ballena (Whale´s Tail), an añejo variety packaged in a bottle of the expected shape, representing Baja California Sur and our wealth of whales during the right season.
Tasting tequilas can turn an ordinary evening into something truly special, and enhancing the experience even more are tequilas from Los Cabos. Like the region itself, these sophisticated spirits that represent it possess a magic that will leave you wanting more.
