Los Cabos Ecology - Vacations #1 Villa Rental Agency Los Cabos Vacations, Villa Rentals and Beachfront Resorts

In Los Cabos, ecology can be explored on both land and sea. While many vacationers come for luxury beachfront accommodations and superb golf, many also recognize that much of the region's allure lies in the natural wonders beyond the beaten track.

Prior to Cabo's development boom, determined (and often wealthy) travelers flocked in private airplanes and sailboats to what was then a remote setting with few creature comforts. Why did this devoted following spring up around a distant, dusty Baja region, with little more than traditional fishing villages? It was quite natural, really. At Los Cabos, the haunting beauty of Baja's desert terrain descends dramatically into some of the richest waters on the planet. It was Cabo's unique ecology—the inspiring landscape and astoundingly diverse marine life that drew these hardy travelers and which continues to entrance visitors today.

Los Cabos is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Sea of Cortez to the East. This unique commingling of oceans has resulted in a rich marine wilderness and an explosion of sea life that is unrivaled elsewhere in the world. Cabo's pioneering visitors relished this abundance, heading out into the waters with local guides to battle colossal marlin, sailfish, tuna and dorado. Today, Cabo remains one of the world's premier sport fishing destinations. Experienced crews lead fishing charters in search of prize specimens. With an eye to conservation, catch and release is encouraged. However, those desiring a trophy (or great dinner) can retain their catch, ship it home or even have it prepared at a local restaurant.

Colorful corals of Cabo

Some enjoy the simple pleasure of viewing ocean life in its natural element. Jacques Cousteau dubbed the Sea of Cortez the “Aquarium of the World” for good reason. You'll find a host of beautiful snorkeling and diving spots, like Playa Santa Maria and Chileno Bay, where tropical fish feed in sheltered coves. Cabo Pulmo, north of San José del Cabo, is a National Marine Park and home to one of North America's three largest living coral reefs. In addition to the beautiful tropical fish, divers here may encounter graceful (and giant) manta rays and whale sharks. Around Cabo San Lucas, you can explore the “sand falls,” where sand cascades along a canyon wall to the depths of the bay, or observe the angelfish, parrotfish, turtles and playful sea lions around Land's End.

While the varied denizens of Cabo's deep are all true charmers, it's the biggest marine inhabitants of Cabo's waters that are some of the region's most beloved. After all, what's more endearing than a nursery full of newborns? Humpback and Gray whales migrate thousands of miles from Hawaii and Alaska to the warm waters of Baja to mate and give birth. Whale watching tours get you up close with these majestic creatures. You're also likely to encounter dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, cormorants and frigate birds. For an educational and interactive experience, Cabo Dolphins offers programs where you can swim and play with bottlenose dolphins.

Desert and ocean vistas

Inland, Cabo offers as many natural charms as in the water. The spectacular desert environment offers inspirational vistas, an abundance of local flora and fauna and as many ways to enjoy the natural diversity. The Boca de Sierra is an UNESCO protected area where your guide will allow you to safely experience the thrill of riding zip lines across the canyon canopy or rappelling down a canyon wall. For a more intimate view of the local landscape consider taking a desert offroad adventure and visiting an authentic pueblo, or hop aboard a Rhino (a small off-road vehicle), Jeep or Hummer to explore the cactus-lined Baja outback.

Outside the boundaries of your beautiful villa or resort, you'll find that the ecological splendor of Los Cabos offers just as many charms as do our distinctive properties. Earth, Sea & Sky can help you plan an ideal itinerary to take advantage of those charms, both in water and on land.
