Our team has been closely monitoring the impact of Hurricane Odile on Los Cabos and the rest of Baja California Sur. Odile struck Cabo San Lucas the night of September 14, 2014, bringing strong wind, rain and powerful surf. The recovery efforts are well under way in Los Cabos, with power restored, Mexican governmental agencies on the ground providing local support, many resorts and villas deep into the cleanup phase and reports of many restaurants, shops and grocery stores reopening. Banks have reopened as well. All signs are promising for a rapid recovery. Phone, cell and internet service has been restored. As tourism lies at the heart of the Los Cabos economy, we’re confident that the destination will be fully operational in the coming weeks and months.

In addition, we have been assessing the damage and requirements to restore our resort. We have been in constant contact with local officials to obtain updates on the wider community and on the airport. This was the largest hurricane to hit the area since 1967 and the impact has been significant. It is therefore taking time to fully confirm a re-opening date although we are making every effort to be open in time for the December holidays. Pueblo Bonito Resorts – Pueblo Bonito PacificaPueblo Bonito Sunset BeachPueblo Bonito Los CabosPueblo Bonito Rose

UPDATE 9/29/14 – The Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) official report is projected to open again for commercial flights by October 8th. Because of this, October 8th will also be the first day that we will start receiving guests at our Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos, Pueblo Bonito Rosé and Pueblo Bonito Pacifica resorts. In order to ensure the complete satisfaction of our mutual clients during the month of October, the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort & Spa will reopen on October 13, 2014.

UPDATE 9/18/14 – We are working hard to clean up debris and to restore operations, and if the destination is ready, our resorts will be ready to receive guests again on October 1st. We would update you on the status of the evacuation process. As previously mentioned, all of the guests at our Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort were to be transferred to the Los Cabos International Airport for evacuation yesterday. We are happy to report that everything went smoothly and the hotel has been successfully evacuated. Today, our Pueblo Bonito Rosé and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos guests are being evacuated, as well as some of the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach guests, who are scheduled to fly out today and tomorrow. As to the status of our resorts, we would like to assure you that our dedicated team members are working hard to clean up and repair the damaged areas. And finally, we would like to inform you that engineers and workers from the Federal Electric Commission have arrived in Cabo and they are working on reestablishing the electrical power and access to drinking water. The electricity and running water at the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach and Pacifica Resorts have already been reestablished. Although we have backup generators and a water plant that have enabled us to provide electricity and water to guests at our resorts during these days, there is still a lack of power and drinking water in the destination itself. We are hopeful that the power will be restored soon, and will keep you updated as things progress.

We are fortunate that Pueblo Bonito Pacifica is in very good condition after the storm, and we anticipate a quick cleanup. As we have previously mentioned, our resorts did not suffer any major damages, only cosmetic damages. At Pacifica, the lobby area, restaurants and bars are all intact. The pool was not damaged; the removal of sand is the only work it will require. There is also cleanup work that needs to be done on other parts of the hotel grounds, as well as in some of the rooms, but our dedicated team is working industriously to take care of all related issues. To be sure, hurricanes make for a lot of work, but our team is confident that the resort will be ready to receive guests starting October 1st.

UPDATE: 9/17/14 – We are happy to inform you that cell phone service has been restored in the destination and you should be able to reach your loved ones on their mobile phones. Additionally, we now have WIFI service at Sunset Beach, so guests there will be able to access their emails on their devices. We do not have confirmation about the WIFI service at our other resorts yet, but we will keep you informed.

Once again, thank you so much for all of your support. We are moved by all the warm words and offers for help we have received. We would like to reiterate that all of the guests and employees at our hotels are doing well. Thanks to our backup generators and to our company’s water plant, we have been able to provide food and water to everyone, as well as provide power at all Pueblo Bonito resorts. We would also like to repeat the fact that there was no structural damage at the resorts; only cosmetic damages and a substantial accumulation of debris.

The evacuation process has been scheduled as follows: all guests at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica are being evacuated today. Tomorrow another 700 guests will be evacuated, all from Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos (Blanco) and Pueblo Bonito Rosé. Guests at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach will be evacuated over the course of two days: Thursday and Friday.

Evacuees will be flying to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Mazatlan so that they can get connecting flights from those cities to return home.

Cell phone service was restored to the destination today, and there is now WIFI service at our Pacifica and Sunset Beach resorts. Please try to contact with your loved ones via these methods of communication.

If everything goes well for the destination, all of our resorts, including will be ready to receive guests starting October 1st

For guests scheduled to arrive in Los Cabos between September 17th and September 30th please reschedule for a later date. Please make changes to your reservation by contacting the channel through which the reservation was booked.

UPDATE: 9/16/14 – Hello all! We want to let you know that we are working very hard to determine a time frame as to when our Cabo San Lucas hotels will be fully operational again. At this point, however, it is too soon to officially establish this time frame. For those of you who have reservations for this week, we recommend you that reschedule your stay for later dates. Please make changes to your reservation by contacting the channel through which the reservation was booked. If you have reservations for September 22nd or after, please stay tuned and we will continue to update you through posts on this page.

Many of you have noticed that you have not able to reach anyone in the destination today. Unfortunately, the telephone and WIFI services have been down throughout Cabo today, but we would like to assure you that all of our guests are safe and sound, and all are being provided with food.

Regarding the airports, a definite date has not been announced for the Cabo International airport (SJD) to reopen, but current advice from airlines indicate that it may reopen around September 22nd for arrivals. Local news is reporting that, according to the Secretary of Tourism, the airport’s two terminals were damaged but the airport is operable. The smaller Cabo San Lucas airport (CSL or MMSL) is not operable and is reported to be closed until October 10th.

In the meantime, the Federal Government of Mexico has announced that there will be an air bridge to evacuate tourists and residents from Los Cabos. The Tourism Ministry has announced that the National Defense ministry, the Mexican Navy, and the Communication & Transport ministry will all be involved in the evacuation process. We will keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Lastly, for those of you who have shown concern about the locals, we have reports from emergency officials in Baja California that 135 people have been treated for minor injuries from flying glass or falling objects, but fortunately, there were no serious injuries or deaths. We sincerely appreciate your warm words of concern for all of our coworkers and guests, and we thank you for your understanding and your patience as we work to restore our services and operations. Please continue to check here for more updates.

9/15/14 – Thank you for all your good wishes and prayers. We would like to inform you that all guests and team members at the Pueblo Bonito Resorts are reported safe. Hurricane Odile has damaged some parts of our hotels but no structural damage was caused. We are working hard to help our guests and cleaning up any damages to restore services as soon as possible. Please stay tuned and we will keep you posted as more information comes available.

Riu Santa Fe and Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas

9/23/14 – RIU Hotels & Resorts has set reopening dates for its two hotels affected by Hurricane Odile, the storm which struck the Los Cabos region overnight on Sunday, September 14th. Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas Hotel will reopen its doors to guests on October 9th and Riu Santa Fe Hotel will reopen just a week later on October 16th.

9/15/14 –  Riu Santa Fe Hotel and Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas Hotel have been strongly impacted by the passing of Hurricane Odile over Cabo San Lucas last night. Fortunately, all of our employees and guests are fine, and we have only suffered some damage to the properties. As a precaution, the authorities of Baja California have decided to cut electrical service, which is in addition to the suspension of the water supply due to the heavy rains. All of this is greatly hindering the efforts of our hotel staff who are working tirelessly and doing as much as possible to accommodate and care for our guests. At the moment, communication with the destination is complicated, but the authorities are already at work reestablishing all services. We appreciate your understanding and will continue to keep you informed. Update Tuesday, 9/16/14 – Communication with Los Cabos is still difficult because the telephone lines are down. We have been in touch with our colleagues, who have told us once again that everyone is fine, and they have given us the following information:

Hotel employees. We have 150 staff at the Hotel Riu Santa Fe and 120 at the Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas. Some employees left the premises yesterday to check whether their families were safe, despite the danger involved in travelling at the moment due to the floods. Many of them have returned to the hotels and others, who were not present when the hurricane hit, have joined their colleagues in looking after guests and in cleaning tasks. It is necessary to bear in mind that rooms are dispersed over large areas and that reaching each room is not an easy task.

Food and drink. At present there is both water and food for the hotel guests. With the support of the Civil Protection service, all measures are being taken to re-establish supply over the coming hours and days.

Additional teams on the way: Our Operations, Technical Services, Food and Beverage, Cleaning and general support teams are ready to leave from our hotels in Vallarta, Mazatlán and Guadalajara. They are just waiting for San José Airport to open so they can travel.

RIU is in constant contact with the local authorities and Civil Protection service. They are the experts on the ground, and are working to re-establish normality.

We appreciate your understanding during this difficult time for guests, the destination, the hotels, and all the staff working there.

UPDATE 9/18/14 – RIU Hotels & Resorts would like to inform you that as of this morning, Thursday September 18th, all guests of the RIU hotels impacted by hurricane Odile, both Riu Santa Fe Hotel and Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas Hotel, have been transferred to the airport where there are flights departing to different cities in the country. Given the extraordinary circumstances which this meteorological phenomenon has caused, we are pleased to report that there are no injuries among our guests and employees. In terms of physical damage to the facilities, a group of technicians from the hotel chain are at work in the destination assessing the properties. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
